GMP Contracting Ltd. was hired by the City of Kawartha Lakes in 2018 to Rehabilitate a designated historic bridge site of Canada. The canal lake arch bridge is the first reinforced arch bridge constructed in Canada originally constructed in 1905 along the Trent Severn Waterway. This was a large-scale and environmentally sensitive project. The goal of the project was to improve the performance and lifespan of the bridge structure without modifying the historic grandeur.

The following is a brief description of the work applicable to the Rehabilitation of the Canal Lake Arch Bridge: 

• Construct cofferdam / flow management / protection systems and set up dewatering scheme to allow construction to be completed in the dry at bottom of canal walls.
• Provide access and scaffolding to complete all work.
• Remove existing asphalt and excavate existing granular fill to expose bridge arch.
• Repair and patch concrete, install waterproofing, and backfill using new granular fill at interior face of arch and spandrel walls.
• Remove existing concrete curb and barrier wall.
• Construct new concrete deck slab, new concrete curbs, and new parapet walls.
• Prepare surface of concrete arch soffit and exterior bridge walls. Install dowels, formwork, and reface.
• Place new asphalt and waterproofing on new deck slab.
• Install new guiderail system with end treatments on all four quadrants.
• Reconstruct all embankments and restore disturbed areas.

This project was successfully completed in March 2019.
