Scope:
In the summer of 2024, GMP Contracting successfully completed the rehabilitation of Bourke’s Bridge in Sesekinika, near Timmins, Ontario. This vital Bailey-style timber bridge serves as the sole access point for the local population to reach the Trans-Canada Highway, making uninterrupted use a critical requirement throughout the project.GMP Contracting undertook the unique challenge of reconstructingthe bridge while maintaining continuous access for residents. To achieve this, the work was performed during nighttime hours, and the bridge was rebuilt incrementally to minimize disruptions. The project involved jacking up the bridge’s superstructure toremove and replace the deteriorating timber abutments. These were upgraded to a modern deck system supported by granular materials and structural steel piles. The bridge deck was then reconstructed section by section, incorporating new steel beams and a durable wood driving surface. This innovative approach ensured the safe and efficient rehabilitation of Bourke’s Bridge, maintaining essential connectivity for the community while delivering a robust, long-lasting infrastructure solution.
